Sport Injuries And Rehabilitation

Sports and exercises improve our health and well-being by keeping our vital organs like heart and lungs healthy which could be fatal. However, we can prevent sports injuries by improving our techniques, warming up, respecting our fitness level and wearing appropriate gears.

Sports injury could be sudden injuries like knee cruciate ligament rupture due to a tackle in football or it could be repetitive strain injury like tennis elbow or golfers elbow. Certain serious injuries like dislocations, fractures and serious head injuries need urgent visit to A&E. For most of the other injuries first line of treatment needs to be PRICE (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and elevation) for first 48 hours. You can also take off the shelf pain killers and anti-inflammatories to reduce inflammation however, inflammation is a stage of healing process therefore you don’t want to suppress it too much with anti-inflammatories and Ice. Current evidence for ice application suggests repeated application of 10 minutes. If you symptoms are not improving after 48 hours you should seek your doctor’s or physiotherapist advice who can assess and guide you on further management. Most of the minor injuries can resolve with specific home exercises, medications and/or regular physiotherapy treatment however, certain injuries need further investigation and may need surgery.
